One of the most subtle horror pictures ever conceived, It Follows wrings great dramatic tension from two activities: watching and waiting. Writer/director David Robert Mitchell sketches a scenario based entirely upon the unknown. Like Predator or Final Destination, there’s a moment where hyper alert tension shifts into sudden impact. When that happens, the story tightens its grip exponentially.

The highly desirable Jay Height (Maika Monroe) wakes from a recent close encounter with a chap… only her situation has changed. Having “done the deed,” something mysterious and terrible wants to hunt her down.

Suburban dwellings, streets marked by fallen leaves and run down ghettoes form avenues of expressive horror. Thus, editor Julio Perez IV tantalizes our imaginations by shaping reaction shots around the mundane.

Overall, It Follows takes a different approach compared to regular gory showings. As such, it’s the finest horror picture I have seen in many a moon. (Capsule review)
