Kids on a Mission
by Betty Jo Tucker

Aimed at pre-schoolers, Little Einsteins: The Legend of the Golden Pyramid DVD surprised me by being such fun to watch as an adult. But, hey, who wouldn’t be enchanted by four cute little kiddies who take on a mission to find a special pyramid in Egypt in order to release the music inside? The Little Einsteins include Leo, June, Quincy and Annie -- and each one of these animated charmers lends particular talents to the task at hand. Assisting our heroes is Rocket, their special means of transportation.

Six-year-old Leo, who loves music, serves as the conductor of the intrepid group. He shows us the notes and tells us about the music we’re listening to as the adventure unfolds. Leo’s four-year-old sister Annie makes up songs on the spur of the moment. She also enjoys singing them to everyone and just happens to be the only one who’s able to fly Rocket all by herself. Quincy’s talent involves being able to play any instrument, but his favorites are the violin and trumpet. He’s five years old and likes to tell jokes. June, who’s six years old, dances up a storm with her leaps, spins and twirls that sometimes change the direction of the mission.

In The Legend of the Golden Pyramid, Quincy finds a golden harp with the power to open anything by playing its magical song. When the Little Einsteins discover that music is trapped inside the Golden Pyramid in Egypt, they hop aboard Rocket to save the day. But they can’t accomplish their mission without the help of viewers who must clap, sing, dance and solve a few puzzles right along with them.

Included in this DVD are two other Little Einstein adventures: The Dragon Kite and Annie and the Little Toy Plane. In the former, the youngsters travel to China to set free some colorful dragon kites and help them participate in a parade along the Great Wall of China -- and in the latter, a green helicopter must be untangled from the top of a huge redwood tree in San Francisco. Of course, as in the Golden Pyramid adventure, the audience has to help with each of these missions.

Kudos to the child development experts and musicians behind The Little Einsteins series (which can be seen on the Disney Channel)! This delightful interactive experience for pre-schoolers gives youngsters a chance to respond to what’s happening on screen and exposes them to classical music as well as to famous works of art.

With its colorful animation and endearing Little Einsteins characters, The Legend of the Golden Pyramid DVD almost makes one wish to be kid again.

(Released by Walt Disney Home Entertainment and rated “G” for no age restrictions.)
