Marilyn Monroe: On the Couch
by Betty Jo Tucker

How did Marilyn Monroe, who started out as Norma Jeane Baker, become an icon of the 20th century? Author/psychoanalyst Dr. Alma Bond drops by Movie Addict Headquarters on February 18th to talk about “Marilyn Monroe: On the Couch,” her fascinating fictionalized biography of the great but troubled film star. Written from a unique and revealing perspective, this book takes readers on a whirlwind tour not only of Marilyn’s life and loves but also of mid-century Hollywood.

In “Marilyn Monroe: On the Couch,” Marilyn reveals her life story to her psychoanalyst, who helps her connect the facts of her early life to the emotional illness which propelled her to a tragic and early death. The book also illuminates the gradually deepening relationship between doctor and patient, and how it led to Marilyn's growth as a woman and great actress.

Alma H. Bond received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, and became a highly successful psychoanalyst in private practice for 37 years in New York City. She "retired" to become a full-time writer, but now maintains a small practice in addition to writing. “Jackie O: On the Couch,” the first of her On the Couch series to be published by Bancroft Press, was published in 2011, receiving a Pinnacle Book Achievement Award. “Margaret Mahler, a Biography of the Psychoanalyst” was published by McFarland Press in 2008. “Michelle Obama, a Biography,” was just published by Greenwood Press. A prolific writer, Dr. Bond has published 18 other books and a play about the life and loves of Maria Callas, which was produced off-off Broadway and is currently touring Florida.

Dr. Bond is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Dramatists Guild, PEN, the International Psychoanalytic Association, and the American Psychological Association. She taught psychoanalysis at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, where she is currently a fellow. She is the widow of renowned actor Rudy Bond and the mother of three children and grandmother of eight.
