Filmmaker Kate Melville
by Betty Jo Tucker

Canadian filmmaker Kate Melville visits Movie Addict HQ on May 21st to discuss Picture Day, her award-winning movie which is being released in the U.S. on the same day. Kate’s unusual coming-of-age comedy marks her debut as a feature filmmaker and has already earned recognition on the festival circuit, including an Audience Choice Award at the Riverrun International Film Festival and Best New Canadian Feature Film at the 2012 Whistler Film Festival. Kate grew up in Toronto and studied film production at Concordia University in Montreal. She worked as a story editor and script writer for such television series as Degrassi: The Next Generation, Being Erica, and Endgame.

Picture Day stars Tatiana Maslany as a rebellious teenager who’s forced to repeat her last year of high school and finds herself between two very different admirers as well as between adolescence and adulthood. One critic observed that Kate and Tatiana have managed “to create a protagonist that’s unique, infuriating, complex and memorable.” Casting Tatiana in the lead role was a wise decision. In addition to her work in Picture Day, this talented young actress is receiving kudos for her amazing performance as a variety of intriguing clones in the BBC hit TV series Orphan Black.

Here are excerpts from Jason Whyte’s review of Picture Day at efilmcritic.com:

Kate Melville's incredibly strong motion picture debut …. is not only a unique coming of age story, but also one of the smartest movies on youth I have seen since Freaks & Geeks aired on TV over a decade ago.

Picture Day is anchored by a performance by Tatiana Maslany (as Claire) that is nothing short of remarkable. Featured in nearly every scene, she is a tiny force to be reckoned with; smart, beautiful and has everything figured out just before you do.

The movie also has a beautiful look and feel led by director Melville; the earthy tone of the Toronto setting is gorgeous, the soundtrack really feels like the tunes playing through Claire's MP3 player, and the movie ends on an upbeat but realistic note.

Kate Melville’s interview airs on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, March 21, 2013. During the live show, listeners are invited to call in and to participate in a chat. An archived segment will also be available.
