Walter Dominguez & Shelley Morrison
by Betty Jo Tucker

Filmmakers Walter Dominguez and Shelley Morrison drop by Movie Addict HQ on April 30 to discuss Weaving the Past: A Journey of Discovery, their inspiring documentary about Walter’s excursion back through time to connect with his heroic Mexican-born immigrant grandfather, Emilio Hernandez. Walter served as writer/director and Shelley, his actress wife – best known for playing Rosario, the feisty housekeeper who was an audience favorite in TV’s Will and Grace -- produced this remarkable film, which became a labor of love involving an eleven-year search for clues in El Paso and in Mexico.

Walter explains, “As I investigated and more and more astonishing details emerged, I came to feel that something bigger was at work and unseen forces were guiding me from one person and place to the next, revealing more about Emilio’s turbulent early life than I ever imagined was possible after so many lost decades. The scope of the undertaking gradually evolved into something bigger, and at last I decided I needed to share my grandfather’s epic story with the general public as a feature length documentary.”

Highlights of Weaving the Past include the revelation of amazing secrets about Emilio’s activities in Mexico as well as impressive use of archival material and fascinating re-enactments of key events in Emilio’s past. Walter even called on some of his relatives to play roles of their ancestors -- and they do so quite convincingly. “Only two were actors by training,” Walter says. “The interesting thing was that by re-enacting with conviction, all the people involved had transformative experiences for themselves. In putting on the wardrobe and entering into the personas of the people they were depicting, the re-enactment cast and I gained a tactile and profound sense of past historical times and people.”

Walter and Shelly are now working on their second documentary Whitewashed Adobe: The Rise of Los Angeles, a story about the history of LA from 1850-1950.

Movie Addict HQ’s interview with Walter Dominguez and Shelley Morrison airs on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. During the live show, listeners are invited to call in and to participate in a chat. An archived segment will also be available.
