For the Love of Film
by Betty Jo Tucker

Movie Addict HQ welcomes noted film critic Marilyn Ferdinand, who kicks off the 2012 Film Preservation Blogathon during this special May 8th episode. Marilyn operates Ferdy on Films, which was named a Best World Cinema Blog of 2011. The upcoming Blogathon, scheduled May 13 through May 18, will help the National Film Preservation Foundation raise funds to stream The White Shadow, Alfred Hitchcock’s first credited feature, on the NFPF website. This is a must-hear episode for all movie fans, but especially those who admire Hitchcock, the Master of Suspense.

Explaining why she became involved in this project, Marilyn writes on her blog, “Farran Nehme, the erudite hostess with the mostest at Self-Styled Siren, and I agree that raising funds for film preservation is as addictive as the 7% solution and a much longer-lasting high.”

That’s why from May 13-18, these two dedicated film buffs are “pulling out all the stops “ to take on their most high-profile project yet -- director Graham Cutts’ The White Shadow (1923), the first film in which Alfred Hitchcock made major contributions (as assistant director, screenwriter, film editor, production designer, art director and set decorator).

According to Marilyn, The White Shadow was restored in New Zealand and shown by AMPAS last year in Los Angeles. And now, if enough funds are raised through the upcoming blogathon, the folks at the National Film Preservation Society will be able to stream The White Shadow on their website, so everyone with a computer has access to it.

Many volunteers are helping with this important event, including Marilyn’s blog partner Roderick Heath, who will be opening his solo blog (This Island Rod) for the Film Preservation Blogathon. Also, David Wells of NFPF will be posting photos and clips on Facebook.

Prizes will be offered and donations will be requested, of course, all for a most worthy cause. For more information, please go to www.ferdyonfilms.com and click on the Film Preservation Blogathon poster.

“For the Love of Film” airs on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, May 8, 2012. During the live show, listeners are invited to call in and to participate in a Chat. An archived segment will also be available.
