Mini Review: January 29
by John P. McCarthy

Below is a Mini Review from Cineman Syndicate for one movie opening on January 29, 2010.

EDGE OF DARKNESS. Revenge thrillers typically don't reference ancient writers such as Diogenes, yet this tense example, based on an acclaimed BBC miniseries, manages to work him in nicely. Mel Gibson plays a Boston police detective who goes on the warpath after his twenty-four-year-old daughter is gunned down. Although the conspiracy behind her murder is more timeworn than classical, director Campbell (Casino Royale) exhibits supreme confidence and enlists talents (Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, and co-screenwriter William Monahan) to ensure justice is done. Somber with a supernatural dimension, the picture doesn't catapult the viewer into the dark as brusquely as you might anticipate. Violence is deployed sparingly and, consequently, quite effectively. (R) GOOD THRILLER. Director - Martin Campbell; Lead - Mel Gibson; Running Time - 112 minutes. (Capsule review by John P. McCarthy)
