Catch the Silver City Express
by Betty Jo Tucker

There's good news for movie fans living in Denver, Colorado Springs and Santa Fe. The Silver City Express is coming their way! It's a three-city tour celebrating Silver City, the latest film by legendary independent filmmaker John Sayles. According to a press release for this event, the Silver City Express is organized to expand on the issues that Silver City explores: corruption, the electoral system, political advertising, journalism and environmental, immigration and labor policies.

The event will be held at the following venues:

     • The Lensic Center for the Arts, Santa Fe, 7 p.m. September 8.

     • Kimball's Twin Peaks, Colorado Springs, 7 p.m., September 9.

     • The Paramount Theater, Denver, 7 p.m., September 10

A full screening of Silver City will be included in each stop as well as appearances by Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Steve Earle, actor Kris Kristofferson, John Sayles and other special guests. In addition, cartoonist Tom Tomorrow will be on hand for a slide show presentation.

Sayles calls Silver City a political thriller, a spirited satire and a cautionary tale about the state of American democracy. Set in Colorado, the film follows Dickie Pilager, a grammatically challenged, born-again candidate for governor whose main qualifications seem to be his lineage -- he is the son of a Senator and heir to a formidable political dynasty. While fumbling his way toward elected office, Pilager finds an unexplained corpse that threatens his campaign, the family empire, and the special interest groups who pull his strings. This timely film explores everything from right-wing radio to media concentration, and from immigration to environmental plunderers.

Writer-director-editor Sayles has received two Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay (Lone Star in 1996 and Passion Fish in 1992). His impressive Silver City cast includes Chris Cooper, Richard Dreyfuss, Daryl Hannah, Maria Bello, Danny Huston, Thora Birch, Tim Roth, Kris Kristofferson, Michael Murphy, and Mary Kay Place. Newmarket Films plans to release Silver City in select cities on September 17.

Proceeds from the Silver City Express will benefit regional and national not-for-profit organizations that support a healthy democracy. The event is produced in conjunction with the New Mexico Women's Foundation and presented by Newmarket Films.
